Abstract
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate the therapeutic efficacy of diabetes mellitus using mulberry branch gami saengmaek-san (MBGS). So we researched effects of MBGS on diabetic mouse models.

Methods : Normal groups were not-treated C57BL/6 mice, and the remaining group used db/db mice. Control groups were treated orally with distilled water, glimepiride group were treated orally with glimepiride (1 mg/kg/day), and MBGS groups were treated orally with MBGS (200 mg/kg/day or 400 mg/kg/day). After mice were treated with for 4 weeks, we measured body weight, fasting blood glucose, AST, ALT, ALP, LDH, lipid levels (total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglyceride), insulin, resistin, leptin, and adiponectin.

Results : Body weight, fasting blood glucose, AST, ALT, ALP, and LDH levels of MBGS groups were significantly decreased. Also, MBGS groups were found to have lipid metabolism improvement the levels of ; total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglyceride were decreased. Finally, while the levels of insulin and resistin were significantly decreased, the levels of leptin and adiponectin were significantly increased by MBGS compared with the control group. However, the effect of MBGS is lower than that of glimepiride.

Conclusions : These results suggest that MBGS may have the control effects on diabetes mellitus by regulating the level of blood glucose and lipid metabolism.
